For a truly unique experience and a different view of Argentina, visit an estancia, an Argentine ranch. While many continue to operate as cattle and sheep ranches, others raise thoroughbred horses, and some combine those activities with entertaining a small number of guests. Since virtually none has more than 18 rooms and some as few as three, service is always personal and extremely friendly. Accommodations range from super-luxurious to simple and rustic.

Visiting Buenos Aires team, can suggest you where to go, depending on your special interests.

San Juan Poriahú

This is probably the most remarkable ranch in the northeastern area of the country, on 40.000 acres of land near Esteros del Iberá.

The owner is Ana María Meabe, who belongs to a traditional family of Corrientes Province.
Her sons, Marcos and Fernando García Rams serve and administer the ranch.
Since long ago, they live there; they used to spend vacation in this estancia when they where kids, but now they are captivated by the place, and they can’t think of any other place in the world to live in.

San Juan Poriahú history starts with the Jesuits, on the seventieth century, related to Loreto, a small neighbor town where some old Christian treasures are guarded.
The adobe ranch, dating from three centuries ago, is an evident demonstration of the Jesuit inheritance. The estancia includes houses and other constructions, and it is as wide as the shadows that surround it.

A journey through the esteros, with their islands, vegetation carpets and all their fauna will be a wonderful experience for you.
Marcos is an enthusiastic and curious observer of Nature, so he will call your attention on every animal appearance, telling you the precise name of the animal and giving you details of their behavior.

Lobitos de agua (water wolves, an aquatic mammal), lizards, parrots, armadillos, herons, carpinchos, storks, birds of prey, yacarés (South American crocodiles), aguaraguzú (a strange mix of fox and wolf) are just some of the animals you’ll find there.

Photo hunting will combine relaxation and fun and will show your education and respect for that incredible environment. As San Juan Poriahú is rich with fauna this is an excellent opportunity for that kind of activity. The enthusiastic photographers would not miss the chance for a good catch.

Some estancias are close enough to Buenos Aires so they can be visited on a daytrip. You can watch the gauchos in action, tour the colonial-style mansions and lunch at a typical asado (Argentine barbecue). You can also arrange for an overnight stay.
