Argentine
Wine Market
Global
Context:
Argentine
is the 5th worldwide producer and is ranked 11th among the
exporting countries, although this number is growing year
after year.
Due
to the fixed exchange rate that ruled Argentina during the
90’s (AR$ 1 = U$S 1), the Argentinean Wineries were
focused in a very profitable domestic market. Over those years,
important investments were made in wine growing and state
of the art technology.
After
the Argentinean peso devaluation, the Argentinean Wines achieved
a unique level of international competitiveness. With the
domestic market completely depreciated, the Argentinean Wineries
focused exclusively in producing high quality wines at very
competitive prices. Nowadays, the Argentinean wines meet the
international standards and show an impressive level of competitiveness
among the New World Wines. As the famous French winemaker,
Michel Rolland, mentioned “ …
Argentina has embraced the international taste in wines.”

The Present Situation:
Not
only Argentinean wines are attractive for its price value
relation, the industry in this country shows us another import
assets.
On
the one hand, new geographical areas are arising in Argentina
as promising wine growing regions with favorable climate and
soft conditions for wine production, enlarging and enriching
the argentine wine offer. Except for the Province
of Mendoza, which is the first wine producing region,
many of these viticultural regions are still unknown to the
worldwide consumer.
On
the other hand, this new regions –as well as the old
ones- became the scenario for multiples researches with different
grape varieties. A lot of these varieties like Malbec,
Torrontes, Bonarda, Sangiovese
and Tannat, among others, are scarcely developed
in Europe and already showed to have an excellent future in
the Argentinean terroir.
As
a result, not only the most popular grapes like Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah,
Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc
are showing interesting results in the exotic Argentinean
terroir, but also many unknown grape varieties are founding
a better place to ripe and develop. There are definitely some
new exciting products to taste.
